Alta Sauna opens at Fjord Hotel Alta

Alta Sauna has opened on the fjord at Fjord Hotel Alta, giving the town its first public sauna of this scale.

Alta had no public sauna where residents and visitors could meet. When Arctic Circle became a co-owner of the hotel, the plot came with a position on the Altafjord that made the gap worth closing, and the sauna was built rather than studied.

The building holds up to 30 people. Panoramic windows three metres high open the room toward the fjord, and construction is solid timber throughout, which holds heat steadily through Arctic winters. At the centre stands the largest sauna stove in Northern Norway. Floors and shower walls are laid in Alta slate in a herringbone pattern, a material quarried in the municipality for generations. Separate changing rooms each open onto a cold plunge pool of 2,000 litres held at around three degrees.

Open from early morning until late evening, Alta Sauna serves hotel guests, residents and visitors on the same terms. Uptake has come from both directions: a steady local membership on monthly passes, and regular drop-in traffic.

That combination is the point. A facility depending on hotel occupancy is an amenity. One residents use on a Tuesday in November is infrastructure, and it holds through the seasons tourism does not cover.

Alta Sauna, Flo & Fjære Bistro and the hotel now operate as one site rather than three separate offers, a few steps apart on the same stretch of fjord.
