Altafjord Gjestegård is now FJORD

Altafjord Gjestegård, the only hotel in Alta with a view over the Altafjord, has been rebuilt and renamed Fjord Hotel Alta — the first stage of Arctic Circle's long-term development of the site into a fjord destination.

Arctic Circle became a co-owner of the hotel in January 2025. What changed hands was an established, family-run operation dating back to 1988, sitting in Bossekop within walking distance of the town centre, on a plot with a position no competitor in Alta shares. What the new ownership saw was a property whose location and existing zoning gave it room to become something more than a place to stay overnight.

The work since has been physical rather than announced. The hotel now operates 14 rooms: ten in the main building and four suites in a separate annex. It has been converted to a self check-in model, letting guests arrive late and leave early without reception hours dictating the stay. The restaurant has been rebuilt as Flo & Fjære Bistro, serving locally sourced food with the fjord in view. Outside, Alta Sauna has been built on a terrace above the water, with cold plunge pools, open to hotel guests and residents of Alta alike. The new name follows the work rather than preceding it.

The property is zoned for a larger hotel development, and initial feasibility studies have been completed for how the site could be built out. No decision has been made on scope or timing. Development will follow demand rather than lead it.

Demand is moving. Hotels across Northern Norway recorded a 15 percent increase in overnight stays in February 2026 against the same month a year earlier, compared with 4 percent nationally, and foreign overnight stays rose 36 percent against 14 percent for Norway as a whole. Accessibility is improving in parallel. Finnair opens a direct route between Alta and Helsinki from Easter, connecting the region to a major international hub.

Capacity is responding too. Olav Thon Gruppen has submitted a planning initiative to add 104 rooms in the town centre. Arctic Circle regards that as confirmation of the market rather than a threat to it. At 14 rooms, Fjord Hotel Alta is not competing on volume. Alta's constraint is not a shortage of rooms as such, but a shortage of the kind of stay that combines the view over the fjord with dining, wellness and access to nature in the same place. That is a product the town centre cannot build.

Arctic Circle's approach is to develop places gradually and in step with the destination they sit in. The aim is not to add capacity, but to build hospitality products that make the destination itself stronger through more of the year.
